Ten separate string groups, ten horns, rattles and tam-tam. The huge orchestral apparatus which appeared at the Vienna Musikverein on February 23rd 1913 to play a new work by Arnold Schönberg increased the already tense mood beyond all measure. Many listeners had brought extra-large bundles of keys with them, so as to be able to join in with the "caterwauling" they were certain awaited them.
