The First Woman Composer: Kassia of Constantinople

Of course, that’s a huge simplification. There's no way of knowing whether Kassia of Constantinople really was the Western world's first female composer. What we do know is that she is the earliest woman composer whose works have survived – many of which are considered extremely significant. To this day, the so-called Hymn of Kassia is sung at matins on Holy Wednesday every year in the Orthodox church.
