Live concert with gripping quartet music at Konzerthaus Dortmund: A closer look at the two slow Andante movements is particularly interesting: The young Tchaikovsky wrote a lament in f minor, based on the Adagio in Beethoven’s late String Quartet in F major, op. 59. In later years, Schubert evokes his art song „Death and the Maiden“ (1817), based on a poem by Matthias Claudius, which handles the erry theme of Death personified (from the 16th century). Two very different pieces for quartet, tracking down the song melodies in their own special ways and functioning as guideposts to a great, symphonic form.
