Every year since 2020, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra has celebrated the Velvet Revolution on November 17, which began when a peaceful student protest in Prague in 1989 was violently suppressed by the police. Therefore works are performed which are intended to represent the democratic values of our society. This year, Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená have chosen orchestral songs by Ravel and Bartók, and – to crown it all – the solemn, life-affirming 9th Symphony by Gustav Mahler.
