With this program of works by Strauss, the Vienna Symphony offer a real panopticon of masterful tonal storytelling. In Don Juan, the most radical human urges come to the fore, including passion and longing, but also disillusionment. On the other hand, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, with its rapid changes in mood and smatterings of onomatopoeia, is thoroughly entertaining. The evening comes to a close with the Rosenkavalier suite. With its memorable melodies, ranging from tender to thrilling, it is a wonderful snapshot of the work for musical theater. Philippe Jordan leads a very sizable orchestral lineup.
