Cavalli, Graun, Handel: Apollo e Dafne

{{ message.content }}

Apollo mocks Eros – and Eros takes revenge. With a love arrow he makes Apollo fall madly in love with Daphne – who rejects this love with a lead arrow. It is a cruel story: Apollo harasses her, tries to rape her – Daphne flees and would rather die than let that happen to her. The setting of this story in music was George Frideric Handel's beginning in Italy. Queen Anne attended the English premiere in London and was enthusiastic. The concert program begins with an aria from Francesco Cavalli's Gli amori d'Apollo e di Dafne, followed by the Concerto for viola da gamba and orchestra in D minor by Johann Gottlieb Graun. Viol player Vittorio Ghielmi leads the ensemble Il Suonar Parlante, the soloists of the evening are soprano Anna Prohaska and baritone Fulvio Bettini.
