Knoxville, Tennessee is the birthplace of James Agee, poet, journalist and film critic. In his Knoxville, Summer of 1915 op. 24, American composer Samuel Barber set a poem by Agee, a work narrated from the perspective of a child who loses their father. Barber's music is highly intuitive: a flying carpet on which the soprano voice undertakes a journey. The work gives Camilla Nylund a chance to shine. Afterwards, Marin Alsop and the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien perform Robert Schumann's Third Symphony, the Rhenish, a cheerful work from Schumann's time in the Rhineland.
