A romantic warhorse opens this great evening: Tchaikovksy's great first piano concerto; a piece full of passion, seductive melodies and great moments. The soloist of the evening is Seong-Jin Cho: born in 1995 in Seoul, South Korea, he won the Chopin Competition in 2015 and has been on the big podiums ever since. In the second part of the concert, Lahav Shani conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Rachmaninov's "Symphonic Dances" – a rich work full of powerful rhythms, drama and idyllic musical moments. It was Rachmaninov's final composition – and in the popular first movement, he quotes his own first symphony, which plunged him into a deep crisis.
